Former US President Jimmy Carter Passes Away At 100

Jimmy Carter, the esteemed former president of the United States and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has passed away at the age of 100, as announced by his nonprofit organization on Sunday.

Carter had been receiving hospice care since mid-February 2023 at his residence in Plains, Georgia, the town of his birth and where he once operated a peanut farm before ascending to the governorship of Georgia and eventually the presidency.

According to The Carter Center, he died “peacefully” at home, surrounded by his loved ones. His son, Chip Carter, expressed profound admiration, stating, “My father was a hero, not only to me but to all who believe in peace, human rights, and selfless love.”

Carter was the oldest living former US president and holds the record for the longest-lived president in the nation’s history. This longevity seemed improbable back in 2015 when he disclosed his battle with brain cancer.

Despite his health challenges, the former Navy officer and devout Christian lived a remarkably fruitful life after his presidency, which is often viewed as a challenging period. During his single term from 1977 to 1981, he emphasized human rights and social justice, achieving notable successes such as the Camp David Accords, which established a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt.

However, his presidency faced significant difficulties, including the Iran hostage crisis, which culminated in a failed rescue mission for the 52 Americans held captive in 1980. His administration also faced criticism for its management of an oil crisis. In the subsequent election, Ronald Reagan, a Republican, decisively defeated Carter, marking the end of his presidency after one term.

As time went on, a more complex view of Carter emerged, one that acknowledged his considerable contributions after leaving office. He founded the Carter Center in 1982 to promote global diplomacy and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his relentless advocacy for social and economic justice.

Carter was an active observer of elections worldwide and served as a mediator in international conflicts, addressing issues from North Korea to Bosnia. Known for his warm smile, he often spoke of the fundamental Christian principles of justice and love that guided his presidency. He continued to teach Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains well into his 90s.

In recent years, Carter underwent various medical treatments, including radiation for his brain cancer, which he revealed in August 2015. Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock, who leads the Ebenezer Baptist Church where Martin Luther King Jr. once preached, extended his sympathies to the Carter family as the former president entered hospice care last year.

“Throughout his life, President Jimmy Carter, a man of deep faith, has walked alongside God,” Warnock shared on social media. “In this delicate time of transition, God is surely with him.”

In April 2021, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden visited the Carters at their home, where a photograph captured the two couples smiling together, although only Rosalynn Carter was seen outside, using a walker to bid farewell to the Bidens.

Rosalynn Carter, who was married to Jimmy for 77 years, passed away on November 19, 2023, at the age of 96. The former president, appearing frail, poignantly attended her memorial service in a wheelchair, with a blanket on his lap featuring their images.

He is survived by their four children: three sons and a daughter.
