The Federal Government has officially adopted the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun, Ogun State, as a Federal University of Education, marking a historic transition for Nigeria’s first specialised university of education.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the adoption on Friday, expressing gratitude to the Ogun State Government for offering the institution as a federal asset. This move makes TASUED the first federally owned tertiary institution in Ogun East Senatorial District.

Named after the late Dr. Tai Solarin, a revered educationist and activist, TASUED has played a crucial role in teacher training and educational development since its establishment in 2005. President Tinubu emphasized that the transition is not just about federal expansion but also a tribute to Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Dr. Tai Solarin, two legendary figures in Nigeria’s education history.

“This is an opportunity for the Federal Government to honour Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who pioneered free education in Western Nigeria, and Dr. Tai Solarin, who dedicated his life to educating and shaping future leaders at Mayflower School, Ikenne,” Tinubu stated.

He also acknowledged the Awujale of Ijebuland, who played a critical role in preventing TASUED’s closure in 2012, securing its continued existence as a beacon of learning in Ogun State.

With TASUED now under federal ownership, it joins Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, and Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo, as the nation’s top institutions dedicated to teacher training.

The Federal Government assured that TASUED’s transition will require minimal investment, given its well-developed academic infrastructure. This move aligns with Nigeria’s broader strategy to improve teacher education and enhance learning quality nationwide.

The adoption is expected to elevate TASUED’s academic profile, attract more funding, and open doors for expanded research opportunities, making it a formidable force in Nigeria’s educational landscape.
