Edo State: Don’t Probe Obaseki – Wike Urges Governor Okpebholo

Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has advised Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State against initiating any probe into the administration of his predecessor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki. Instead, Wike called on the new governor to channel his energy and the state’s resources toward impactful governance and development.

The former Rivers State governor made this appeal during his visit to Benin City, according to a statement released by his spokesperson, Mr. Lere Olayinka.

“If anyone has reasons to go after Obaseki, I do — considering the political betrayal I endured. But those days are gone,” Wike remarked. “Leadership is about progress, not vendetta. Don’t waste your mandate chasing shadows.”

Wike, who had played a prominent role in supporting Obaseki’s re-election bid in 2020 against the backdrop of intra-party wrangling, said he had chosen to let go of past political disappointments. He encouraged Governor Okpebholo to do the same for the sake of Edo’s future.

In a rare moment of candour, Wike publicly apologised to former Edo governor and APC chieftain, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, acknowledging the role he played in what he described as political humiliation.

“Leader, I deeply regret how things unfolded. I was part of the campaign that humiliated you while standing behind Obaseki. I’ve apologised on national television, and I’m doing it again here today,” Wike said.

The FCT Minister’s visit to Edo was originally scheduled for the formal commissioning of the newly completed Edo Line Terminal, a key component of the second phase of the Benin Central Bus Terminal project. However, the inauguration was postponed following the death of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari.

Wike ended his remarks by reiterating the need for purposeful leadership.

“Let the past remain in the past. Focus on governance, and the people of Edo will remember your name for the right reasons,” he advised.
