Edo Assembly Suspends All 18 Local Government Chairmen Over Alleged Financial Misconduct
The Edo State House of Assembly has in a dramatic session on Tuesday passed a resolution suspending all 18 local government chairmen and their deputies for two months over allegations of insubordination and financial misconduct.
The suspension followed a petition by Governor Monday Okpebholo, who accused the council leaders of refusing to submit their financial records to the state government. The governor described their actions as gross misconduct and urged the Assembly to take decisive action.
During the heated debate, lawmakers were divided, with 14 members voting in favor of the suspension, six opposing it, and three abstaining. The motion was moved by Esan North East I representative, Isibor Adeh, and seconded by Akoko-Edo Constituency II representative, Donald Okogbe.

Speaker Blessing Agbebaku directed all members to state their positions on the matter before a final headcount was conducted. Following the resolution, the Assembly ordered the leaders of the legislative arms in the affected councils to assume leadership roles during the suspension period.
This bold move underscores the Assembly’s commitment to ensuring accountability at the grassroots level, but it also raises questions about the political and administrative future of the affected councils. How this suspension will impact governance across Edo State remains to be seen.
