Dutch authorities arrest protesters after climate activists blocked the road near The Hague

Hundreds of climate activists blocked one of the main roads to The Hague on Saturday, despite previous attempts to prevent their protest.

Many demonstrators waved colored flags bearing the symbol of the environmental group Extinction Rebellion. And one demonstrator held a sign that read in Dutch: “This is a dead end.”

The group gathered on the A12 near the temporary home of the Dutch parliament.

About an hour after the blockade began, officers began arresting protesters who refused to leave the road.

Earlier this week, authorities arrested six Extinction Rebellion activists on suspicion of incitement in connection with calls to organize the protest.

A judge on Friday upheld an order barring another activist from entering the area for 90 days.

The arrest and detention order sparked unrest among activists who claim it infringes on their right to peaceful protest.
