Drone attack on Iranian Isfahan military factory ‘failed’: Ministry of Defense
A large explosion caused by a “failed” drone attack on a defense factory shook the Iranian city of Isfahan late Saturday night.
“One of the [the drones] was hit by the … air defenses and the other two were caught in defensive traps and exploded,” Iran’s defense ministry said in a statement.
“Fortunately, this failed attack did not cost any human life and caused minor damage to the roof of the workshop.”
Iran’s defense ministry did not disclose who it suspected was behind the attack, which claimed no casualties and caused only minor damage to the roof of the defense plant.
The strike comes after Iranian state television reported that a fire had broken out at an oil refinery in an industrial area near the northwestern city of Tabriz.
It said the cause was still unknown as it showed footage of firefighters trying to put out the blaze.
It is unclear if there is a connection between the two incidents.
There have been multiple explosions and fires around Iranian military, nuclear and industrial facilities in recent years.
Iran has accused Israel of carrying out a series of attacks on the country, including an April 2021 attack on the Natanz underground nuclear power plant that damaged its centrifuges.
In 2020, Iran blamed Israel for a sophisticated attack that killed its top military scientist in the nuclear field.
Israeli officials rarely acknowledge operations by the country’s covert military units or Mossad intelligence. However, at his swearing-in ceremony in December, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said halting Iran’s nuclear program was one of his top priorities.
