Controversy As Governor Makinde Installs New Alaafin Amidst Oyomesi Rejection

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has presented the staff of office to Prince Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo, despite strong opposition from the Oyomesi, the traditional kingmakers of the ancient kingdom.

The announcement of Prince Owoade, who succeeds the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, sparked outrage among five prominent Oyomesi members. In a statement signed by their legal representative, Adekunle Sobaloju (SAN), the kingmakers declared the appointment illegal, claiming their chosen candidate, Prince Luqman Gbadegesin, was sidelined.

The Oyomesi faction opposing the governor’s decision includes High Chief Yusuf Akínade, Bashorun of Oyo; High Chief Wakeel Akindele, Lagunna of Oyo; High Chief Hamzat Yusuf, Akinniku of Oyo; Chief Wahab Oyetunji, and Chief Gbadebo Mufutau, who signed on behalf of the Alapinní and Asipa of Oyo.

Despite these claims, the state government maintained that the process was fair and thorough. A statement from the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, emphasized that the selection followed rigorous consultations and traditional divinations.
