A cholera outbreak has swept through Niger State, claiming at least 12 lives and hospitalising more than 230 individuals across six local government areas, health authorities confirmed on Wednesday.

The outbreak was first detected in Shiroro Local Government Area on Sunday but has since rapidly spread to Minna, Bosso, Magama, Bisa, and Munya LGAs.

Health officials revealed that 239 patients are currently receiving treatment in various primary healthcare centres, prompting the state government to activate emergency measures.

In a swift response, an isolation and treatment centre was established at the old wing of the Late Sen. Idris Kuta Primary Healthcare Centre in Minna. The Commissioner for Primary Healthcare, Dr. Ibrahim Dangana, announced that a multi-sectoral response team has been deployed to the affected areas to contain the spread.

“We have set up treatment and isolation centres in the affected LGAs. In addition, we’ve launched intensive sensitisation campaigns targeting faith-based groups, community leaders, and the eight emirates of the state,” Dr. Dangana stated.

Cholera, a waterborne disease often linked to poor sanitation and contaminated water sources, remains a recurrent health challenge in parts of Nigeria during the rainy season.

Authorities have urged residents to prioritise hygiene, avoid drinking untreated water, and report symptoms such as diarrhoea and vomiting to the nearest healthcare facility.

Efforts are ongoing to stem further spread as health workers race against time to manage the crisis.
