BREAKING: Popular Plus-Size Actress And Influencer, Monalisa Stephen, Passes Away In Lagos

The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of popular plus-size actress and content creator, Monalisa Stephen.
Monalisa, whose full name was Monalisa Ayomide Stephen, reportedly passed away on Tuesday in Lagos after a battle with complications linked to low blood sugar and internal bleeding. Her death was confirmed by her immediate younger sister.
The tragic news was made public on Wednesday by Seun Oloketuyi, founder of Best of Nollywood (BON), who shared a tribute via Instagram. “Brand influencer Monalisa Ayobami Stephen is dead. She died yesterday in Lagos after losing the fight against low sugar and internal bleeding,” he wrote alongside her photograph.
Monalisa Stephen, affectionately known as Gabacci by her followers, gained prominence through her powerful advocacy for body positivity and self-love, particularly among plus-size women. Beyond her influence on social media, she featured in Nollywood films such as Breaded Life (2021) and Mami Wata (2023), and was well-known for her roles in a variety of popular comedy skits.

In a recent interview with The PUNCH, Monalisa voiced her concerns about the lack of inclusivity in Nollywood, calling out the industry’s bias against plus-size actresses. “They’re biased against plus-size actresses, and it’s becoming worse for a generation with a fast mind,” she said. “I don’t know who started the idea of putting one’s look over one’s talent. That is so ridiculous. They need to do better—all sizes should be included!”
Fans, fellow creatives, and advocates of body positivity have since flooded social media with tributes, expressing grief over the loss of a vibrant and courageous voice in the entertainment space.
As tributes continue to pour in, Monalisa Stephen will be remembered not only for her creative work but also for her unflinching dedication to breaking stereotypes and celebrating body diversity in media.
May her soul rest in peace.
