[BREAKING] Naira/Fuel Scarcity: Makinde deploys free buses in Oyo
The governor of Oyo state, ‘Seyi Makinde, has announced the deployment of free Omituntun transport buses to ease the pain of the people of the state after the twin crisis of naira and fuel scarcity that Nigerians have been facing in recent weeks .
On Friday, some aggrieved residents besieged Oyo’s state secretariat during a violent protest to protest the scarcity of naira notes and petrol.
After that, Makinde postponed his re-election campaign indefinitely, saying he could not campaign because the people are facing unnecessary hardship.
Governor Makinde, announced in a statewide broadcast on Friday evening on the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS), said the state government was ready to do everything in its power to alleviate the suffering of the masses.
On Saturday morning, in a statement from the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, the Governor indicated that the Governor also put all security services operating in the state on alert to prevent any disturbance of public order.
The statement also quoted the governor urging people to ensure they use their permanent voter cards to usher in responsible government in the upcoming general election, adding that resorting to violence creates other problems.
According to him, the Omituntun Mass Transit Buses would be used for free on more routes within the state to ease the suffering of the people.
The governor also said that the state was also working with local government presidents to provide immediate palliative remedies to the vulnerable people to alleviate the hardships that the dual scarcity of naira and fuel has brought upon them.
He urged all law-abiding citizens and residents of the state to conduct their lawful activities peacefully.
The governor said: “I have always maintained that peaceful protests are fine. If things don’t go the way we want, we have the right and even the responsibility to protest.
“As a result of this, I have immediately suspended all campaign activities. I also met with the chiefs of security in Oyo State to restore calm and keep the peace in our precious state.
“As a mitigating measure, I have indicated that the Omituntun public transport buses should be deployed on more routes within the state for free. “We are also working with local government chairpersons to see what immediate palliatives we can make available to the most vulnerable among us to alleviate the hardships that the dual fuel scarcity and naira have caused for our people.”
