A new faction within the Fusengbuwa Ruling House has formally declared itself as the “Original Fusengbuwa Ruling House” ahead of the succession process to the revered stool of the Awujale of Ijebuland.

The announcement was made on Thursday during a press briefing at the Oba Adesimbo Tunwase Museum & Hall, Agunsebi, Ijebu-Ode. The faction, coordinated by Chief Fassy Yusuf, draws its strength from four branches of the ruling dynasty: the Jadiara, Bubiade, Tunwase, and Fusengbuwa Royal Houses.

Chief Yusuf explained that the word “Original” was adopted purely for identification and not as a means of exclusion, stressing that unity remains paramount as the family prepares for the royal succession.

He further disclosed that the official mourning period for the late Awujale, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, CFR, GCON—who joined his ancestors on July 13, 2025—will end on Sunday, October 11, 2025. This, he noted, will pave the way for the commencement of the succession process.

Citing the Declaration made under Section 4(2) of the Chiefs Law of 1957, Chief Yusuf reiterated that four ruling houses are recognized to present candidates for the Awujale stool: Gbelegbuwa, Anikinlaiya, Fusengbuwa, and Fidipote—with Fusengbuwa next in line.

On eligibility, he clarified that aspirants must hail from the ruling house through the male line, though succession may also pass through the female line under the Abidagba principle. Responding to inquiries about the Folagbade Adenuga group’s claims, he stated firmly that Folagbade is not listed among the recognized ruling houses, urging them to align with one of the four legitimate branches.

As part of its preparations, the faction unveiled two initiatives: a membership registration exercise to compile a comprehensive family database, and the issuance of Expression of Interest forms for aspirants to the throne. While the forms are free, voluntary contributions of ₦2,000 were encouraged to support the database project.

For now, the group’s leadership structure is temporary, with Chief Fassy Yusuf serving as coordinator and Pastor Prince Bola Salami as secretary. He assured that the formal head of the family will be announced in due course.

Dignitaries at the event included Otunba Odedina Emmanuel, Oloriebi of Jadiara; Prince Adewale Jadesinmi, Oloriebi of Bubiade; Prince Bolarinde Salami, Secretary; Chief G.A. Sanni, Balogun of Esugbon; and Oba Prof. Titilayo Hassan, Elesugbon of Esugbon, alongside other representatives from the four branches of the Fusengbuwa lineage.
