Atletico beat Getafe 3-0 in season opener
Alvaro Morata struck twice to secure Atletico Madrid’s 3-0 win over Getafe in their opening game of the La Liga season on Monday.
Morata, who has returned to Atletico after two years on loan at Juventus, scored a goal in each half before Antoine Griezmann took the points.
Joao Felix played a key role in scoring all three goals, with Morata hitting in from the edge of the penalty area in the 15th minute.
Borja Mayoral cleared the bar for Getafe late in the first half, but Morata calmed Atletico’s nerves with a clinical finish on the hour after Stefan Mitrovic’s error.
Felix then screwed the ball through for Griezmann, who cut in and drove low into the corner to ensure Atletico got off to a winning start after Luis Suarez’s departure.
The Uruguayan returned to his youth club Nacional for a short time in July after his contract with Atlético expired.
Athletic Bilbao drew 0-0 at home to Mallorca, with Real Betis hosting Elche later on Monday to complete the opening round in Spain.
