Former Vice President and 2023 Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to embrace the “Nigeria first” principle in governance rather than focusing on personal and political interests.

Atiku’s reaction comes after a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Public Communication and Orientation, Sunday Dare, who dismissed a recent gathering of opposition politicians and dissenting figures within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as a mere political maneuver driven by selfish ambitions.

Dare asserted that President Tinubu remained “undistracted and unperturbed” by the meeting, describing future political contests as a “combat” and a “fight” ahead of the 2027 general elections.

However, in a statement released on Sunday by his media adviser, Paul Ibe, Atiku urged the government to focus on national unity and healing rather than making divisive remarks about other nations or questioning the patriotism of Nigerians.

“At a time when the country needs cohesion, it is ironic that the Tinubu administration, which ascended power through a self-entitled mindset, would ridicule Nigerians on matters of patriotism,” Atiku stated.

“We call on the government to practice what it preaches by embracing the ‘Nigeria First’ ideals instead of pandering to self-entitlement and other divisive sentiments,” he added.

The former Vice President further lamented the increasing ethnic, religious, and class divisions in Nigeria since the advent of the Tinubu administration, emphasizing the urgent need for inclusive leadership that prioritizes national interest above all else.
