APGA supporters accuse Ebubeagu of brutality
… Security outfit denies allegations
A supporter of the All Progressives Grand Alliance in Ebonyi state, Amobi Ujar, was reportedly beaten to a pulp by members of the state’s security organization, Ebubeagu, on Saturday.
Our correspondent understood that the victim, Ujar, allegedly received a call from an alleged Ebubeagu informer and was lured to the Why Worry area of Amaehara Village, in the Afikpo North Local Government Area of the state, where he was reportedly arrested by officers was knocked into a coma by the uniform. It was further alleged that the agents hung Governor David Umahi’s campaign flag around his neck and forced him to make a “confession statement” against himself and his party, APGA.
A local source, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, claimed that the victim, a car mechanic, thought he was being called to repair a broken-down vehicle for some holidaymakers, but was sadly ambushed and ruthless beaten.
“Amobi is just a child of circumstances. He was at his house when someone who works for the APC called him and asked him to come to Why Worry. Suddenly the Ebubeagu people attacked on him and started beating him.
“Without passersby knowing what they intended to do to him, they might even have killed him. He was beaten and forced to say he was working for the APGA to take down all campaign materials of APC candidates in the area. But we know it’s all lies. He did nothing. The APC operatives are the ones pulling down campaign materials from other opposition politicians in the area and across the state,” the source claimed.
In response, Ebubeagu commander in Ebonyi state, Friday Nnana-Ujor, confirmed the incident but said Ujar was not framed, but was arrested while destroying campaign banners of the APC candidates in the area.
“Don’t call it an attack, because an attack is warlike. But the truth is that the suspect, who is an APGA supporter in Afikpo North, was caught tearing up billboards of the APC candidates and so my men arrested him.
“No one is accusing anyone of the campaign billboards in Ebonyi State. People will destroy campaign materials in the state and tag it that the APC members are responsible.
“Even in meetings, Governor Umahi has said on several occasions that no one should touch any campaign material belonging to any candidate, despite party ties; and so we strictly adhere to that instruction. And even in this state, we’ve caught the PDP members tearing up billboards of their own candidates.
“This is just to let you know that we are impartial and we do our job without being biased. So the man was arrested while committing a crime. It was not framed. He was not forced to confess. He was not attacked.”
Meanwhile, Iheukwumere Okogwu-Otu, a supporter of the APGA senate candidate for Ebonyi South Zone, has claimed that Ebubeagu agents raided his home in the Afikpo North council and took valuables.
He claimed that his life and that of his relatives were under threat, adding: “At the moment I am not in my house for fear of being attacked or possibly killed.”
He said, ‘I don’t know why they went to my house. I went out early this morning for an exercise and suddenly my mother called me and announced that Ebubeagu people were in my house.
“While some of them were talking to my mother outside, others had broken into the apartment through the ground floor. They took a bicycle from my house, took some important or valuable items. They also shot and punctured the tires of the APGA campaign Sienna bus parked on my property.
“This gets out of hand. My life and that of my family is no longer safe. I call on the security services to act and find out what the people of Ebebeagu are up to.”
