Anambra sex worker found dead in hotel room
A commercial sex worker identified simply as Chisom has been found dead in her room in a hotel (name undisclosed) in Onitsha, Anambra State, under controversial circumstances.
According to an eyewitness account, the deceased, who is from Enugu state, was found dead on Monday morning after she swept her room and washed the dishes she had used the previous night.
The situation caused the other sex workers at the hotel to begin evacuating their belongings from their rooms in an attempt to flee the area.
The incident caused confusion in the neighborhood as residents gathered around the scene of the incident to discuss the matter.
While some suspected murder, others believed the deceased had committed suicide.
A source who saw the corpse before it was taken away at around 2:10 p.m. argued that the placement of the corpse suggested the deceased had been strangled and could not possibly have committed suicide.
Another source and a colleague of the deceased said she may have been strangled by an early caller over a financial disagreement.
She added that last week the deceased had a disagreement with a caller, who allegedly paid her, but she refused to give him an assessment, a situation that led to a serious argument and a threat from the caller.
A 70-year-old woman who lived near the hotel, identified as Mama Chizoba, revealed that the sex workers collected between N5,000 and N7,000 depending on the class of the callers.
She wondered why the owners of the hotel would allow the other girls to evacuate their personal belongings from the hotel when the matter has not yet been fully investigated.
She dismissed claims that the deceased had hanged herself and said all the call girls at the hotel have questions to answer.
According to her, “It is painful that this kind of death will happen in a notorious hotel like this and the owners will allow the prostitutes living there to leave the hotels in broad daylight with their personal belongings when the corpse of their colleague they claimed to have hanged himself, has not been removed and investigated.
“Why do they run away, the owners and people look at them and they leave with their personal belongings, one after the other, and they want us to believe that the girl committed suicide. How can someone who has hanged himself stand with her feet on the ground?
Some youths who shared the same opinion about the circumstances of the lady’s death completely rejected the theory of the call girl who hanged herself saying that nothing could have driven her to commit suicide due to the nature of the profession she pursues, adding that ladies in such trade are strong of heart and cannot think of taking their life wondering why she stood on her feet.
Police from the Central Police Station, Onitsha, who visited the crime scene at 12:30 p.m., left with some officials from the hotel, who later returned and soon after, an ambulance from the General Hospital, Onitsha mortuary attendant arrived and took away the corpse of the deceased .
Speaking about the development, the Divisional Police Officer, Central Police Station, Onitsha, Ifeanyi Ibru said that an investigation into the matter has been launched.
“We are investigating the matter, the body has been taken,” Ibru added.
