Anambra churches accept old naira notes, says rejection will affect weekly offering projects, tithe
Churches in Anambra state accepted both old and new naira notes during worship sessions on Sunday, saying the rejection of the old notes coupled with the country’s economic hardship will affect donations and weekly tithe projects.
Responding to the CBN’s earlier dateline, one of the Fathers of St. Mathew Catholic Church Amawbia, Awka Council Area of the State, Father Ositadima Anikweze, while calling on CBN to send more new notes to commercial banks sending for rapid circulation, urged Nigerians to always obey government policies for the benefit of all.
He also urged CBN management not to extend the January 31, 2023 deadline.
In his view, Nigerians should show how to obey government policies to avoid making the country look like it has no laws that support existence as a nation.
“I no, in some states, some people have shut down their business due to the scarcity of new Naira notes, but we have no choice but to obey the CBN order,” he said.
The Nigerian Tribune observes a similar situation in The City Of Restoration And Power Assembly Int’l Amawbia, where the pastor of the church, Apostle Ejike Nwude, accepted both the old and new naira notes as offerings and tithes.
While calling on the CBN to ensure that the public gets more new naira notes, the apostle prays for peaceful general elections in 2023 in Nigeria.
Our correspondent, who also visited churches in Onitsha and Nnewi, encountered some people at the bank’s ATMs and saw customers queuing to withdraw new notes at 7am on Sunday morning.
Miss Amaka Onukwe, one of the customers of one of the commercial banks, said that she is in the bank to withdraw new banknotes, but the bank has not dispensed the money since 07:00.
However, she appealed to the top bank and commercial banks to take into account the suffering of Nigerians and provide a solution to the problems.
