The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Media Group in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State has raised alarm over the deteriorating environmental condition of the local government, describing it as one of the dirtiest and most unkempt areas in Nigeria.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Comrade Jinad Hammed lambasted the local government chairman, Hon. Wasiu Lawal, for his alleged inaction in addressing the mounting waste crisis, which has turned several parts of the area into open dumpsites.

“The drainage systems in Sango-Ota have been converted into dumpsites, particularly from the Sango market to the underbridge area, which is now overwhelmed with market refuse, nylons, and food waste,” Hammed stated.

He added, “The situation is no better across other parts of the city. For instance, Popoola Street behind Gateway Bank has become a garbage hotspot, while Ijoko Road is not just littered with waste but also populated by beggars, turning the area into an unsightly comfort zone for vagrancy.”

Highlighting other problem areas, Hammed noted that Joju Road, which links the Idi-Iroko expressway, is plagued by blocked drainages filled with refuse. Similarly, both sides of the expressway leading to the Oju-Ore junction are littered with trash, creating an unbearable stench for residents and commuters alike.

“Even the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) premises and the Ilo-Awela Road towards the toll gate are not spared from the filth, with piles of waste scattered around,” Hammed pointed out, adding that the local government secretariat itself is in a deplorable state.

The PDP media leader criticized the chairman, stating that his lack of preparedness for the role is evident. “Hon. Wasiu Lawal was handpicked by his party and imposed on the people, but now that he’s in office, it’s time to roll up his sleeves and address these pressing issues,” he asserted.

He further advised the chairman to convene meetings with sanitation officers to tackle the environmental degradation and collaborate with TRACE officers to alleviate traffic gridlock in areas like Atan and Oju-Ore.

Hammed suggested that allocating just 20% of the revenue generated from daily tickets sold to traders and motorists could fund a robust sanitation committee to ensure waste is evacuated regularly.

“This is a call to service for Hon. Wasiu Lawal and his cabinet. The people of Ado-Odo/Ota deserve better, and the time to act is now,” Hammed concluded.

This bold statement from the PDP media group places significant pressure on the local government administration to take swift and decisive action to address the waste management crisis and restore dignity to the environment.
