Adebutu Oladipupo: Coming To Macedonia (Series 1) By Adedeji Babington-Ashaye

Hon (Dr) Oladipupo Adebutu FCPA launched himself into gubernatorial reckoning in Ogun State in 2016. He has never hidden his desire to serve the people in a more challenging higher capacity. He craves for it.

His entire life has been defined in the concept of service to humanity and upliftment of the society. He has always being highly passionate about entrenching good governance at every level of opportunity given to serve in any public space.

Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu passion for public service is exemplary and second to none. If there is anything that Ladi enjoys most in life, it is public service which he started majorly in 1992 when he was elected into the Federal House of Representatives.

When some see politics as an opportunity to amass wealth, Ladi sees it as a calling, natural order, and as far as he is concerned, it’s a great honour and pleasure to be of service for the greater good of the people. So, leaving his comfort zone to offer himself for greater service to the people was not a problem.

Even though wealthy by all standards, Ladi could not understand why he should be acquiring properties, choice cars and be cruising in the best of yatch all over the world when the common man is still faced with challenges and the society not ideal yet.

His involvement in politics since 1992 has caused him so much resources, energy, time and upward mobility. Nevertheless, he prefers that part because to him”

“If good people don’t get involved in politics, we will be left in a situation where good people will be slaves to dirty people”.

When the people of Ogun State, considering his pedigree in public service , beckoned on him to contest for the 2023 gubernatorial seat of Ogun State, it was a call Ladi could not reject. He considers it as a higher calling saying, if it is the wish of my people to be their governor, it is my joy and pleasure”.

It is indeed an opportunity for him to contribute his own quota to the overall interest of Ogun State. So, the journey to Macedonia to help begins.

To actualize the aspiration, and knowing fully well that politics is a game of number, Adebutu started to make moves to bring back political allies into the Peoples Democratic Party. He succeeded to a very large extent.

He consulted widely and held meetings with seasoned politicians and elder statemen across the length and breadth of Ogun State. He interacted with the Ogun State party administrators. He visited all the 20 local governments and jaw jawed with the local executives.

He sought their audience and explained the reasons why he would be a better manager of the gateway state. He told them of his agenda to take Ogun State out of the doldrums and lead it to a land of prosperity.

Adebutu explained to the leaders and party executives that he has come into the gubernatorial aspiration with utmost sincerity of purpose which meant that whatever he pledges must come to fruition. He said he understands the attribute the public associate with politics is double speak, that is, the words of politicians are not reliable as they are often broken.

Adebutu, however, distanced himself from such act. He said since he started politics in 1992, he has refused to engage in double speak and always fulfilled his pledges irrespective of the outcome.

This attribute he claimed he imbibed from his father’s teachings and practices, Sir Adebukunola Kesington Adebutu. In his words

“With my father, there are fundamental principles you dare not abridge with him. Once you give him your words, you must be ready to die to change it. It is very hard to do not minding whatever the circumstances dictate.”

“To Baba, once you give a commitment, you must fulfill it irrespective of the circumstances. And that is the mainstay of his business. He went into that business without capital.“

“He went into it with goodwill and his words. And because he maintained that goodwill, the business is successful. He told us his children that good name is better than silver and gold. He told us to think deeply before we make promises saying the moment you make pledges, you must honour your commitment. That is why when I make a pledge, I must fulfill it.”

After listening to his submissions, the leaders, party executives and elected delegates all agreed that he has the pedigree and understood the issues in Ogun State polity. They considered his economic development template as most suitable and appropriate for the gateway state at this time.

So, on May 25, 2022, at the PDP gubernatorial primary held at Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library Auditorium, supervised by the Independent National Electoral Commission, PDP National body and security agencies, the 714 delegates from the 20 local governments in Ogun State voted enbloc for Hon Ladi Adebutu and gave him the ticket to fly the flag of the Peoples Democratic Party at the 2023 Governorship election in Ogun State.
