The Abia State branch of the People’s Democratic Party has allocated the vacant governor’s seat to Itiala Ngwa North Local Government Area, home of the late Prof. Uche Ikonne.

This follows the death of Abia PDP gubernatorial candidate Ikonne on 25 January 2022 and the subsequent directive from the Independent National Electoral Commission to hold a new primary within 14 days to replace him.

The decision was made by the Abia PDP State Caucus at a meeting on Sunday, according to a statement from Abia PDP Deputy Chairman/Acting Secretary of State for Publicity, Abraham Amah.

The members of the caucus came from all over the state, including Abia North, Ikwuano/Umuahia, Ukwa East and Ukwa West Local Government areas.

Those present at the meeting included the Governor of the State, His Excellency, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu; the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Dr. Ude Chukwu; former Governor of Abia State Senator Theodore Orji; the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Engr. Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji; and the other two PDP senate candidates, namely Senator Mao Ohuabunwa and Austin Akobundu.

The meeting was also attended by the statutory members of the Abia PDP State Caucus, except for one who apologized for his absence.

The PDP urged members to support the party caucus’ decision and work towards a successful primary on February 4, 2023.

It also called on members to remain vigilant and to expect more information and briefings from the Publicity Department of the Abia PDP in due course.
