Rauf Aregbesola is today a victim of a style of politics that he helped to promote and perfect.

As a coffin bearing his name was carried around Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State yesterday, he would have had cause to reflect on a day some 22 years ago when a protest he helped to organise at the premises of the Ikeja High Court abused and rough-handled the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi who was arguing the case against a certain politician accused of making false claims and committing perjury.

The supporters of that same politician were the ones who took to the streets yesterday to sing Aregbesola’s nunc dimitis.

Maybe the coffin carriers are the sons of the protesters of those many years past. Or perhaps they were even the same folks, now advanced in age? Whichever, there are some real life lessons to be learnt here.
