Sagamu Youth Association Urges Peace, Unity, and Responsible Campaigns Ahead of August 16 Bye-Election

As the August 16, 2025, National Assembly By-Election draws closer, the Sagamu Youth Association (SYA) has called on residents of Remo land—particularly in Sagamu, Ikenne, and Remo North—to maintain peace, unity, and decorum during the heightened political season.
In a comprehensive statement issued on Wednesday, the association stressed that peace is not only the foundation of a stable society but also the cornerstone of Remo’s long-standing reputation for civility, intellect, and cultural refinement.
“The Remo people are widely known for their civility, intellect, and refined culture. Rascality, thuggery, and hooliganism have no place in our heritage and must be completely rejected,” the statement read.
Call to Stakeholders
The SYA urged all stakeholders—including traditional rulers, community heads, youth leaders, market associations, religious bodies, and civil society groups—to take proactive measures in safeguarding the peace of the constituency. They emphasized that the responsibility of preserving harmony rests not only on political actors but on every segment of the community.
“This is a defining moment for Remo land. We must rise above provocation and resist any attempt to drag our politics into violence. Political competition should never translate into community division or bloodshed,” the association stated.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed August 16 as the date for the by-election, which will determine representation in the National Assembly for the Remo Federal Constituency. The polls will come against the backdrop of intense political mobilization, with various parties and candidates stepping up campaigns across the three local government areas.
The SYA warned that as the tempo of political activity increases, there is a higher risk of confrontation among supporters. The association, therefore, called for issue-based campaigns anchored on solutions to the people’s needs, rather than personal attacks or inflammatory rhetoric.

Code of Conduct for Political Actors
The statement advised political parties and their candidates to:
Focus on Developmental Issues: Address infrastructure, education, security, and economic empowerment.
Avoid Hate Speech: Refrain from language that fuels division or prejudice.
Shun Intimidation and Violence: Ensure rallies and gatherings are peaceful and inclusive.
Respect Electoral Processes: Cooperate with INEC and security agencies for a credible poll.
“No political ambition is worth the life or safety of any citizen. Political offices are temporary, but the unity and dignity of our people are permanent,” the SYA noted.
Youth Leadership and Responsibility
The association underscored the critical role of young people in shaping the political climate, urging Sagamu youths and other Remo indigenes to serve as ambassadors of peace. The group maintained that young people should lead by example by resisting manipulation, avoiding political thuggery, and promoting dialogue over confrontation.
Commitment to Election Monitoring
The Sagamu Youth Association announced that it would work closely with security agencies, election observers, and community leaders to ensure a peaceful electoral process. This includes setting up peace committees to mediate in case of disputes, as well as running public awareness campaigns in markets, schools, and worship centers.
“Our political constituency matters to us, and we must protect its integrity. Let us remember that the world is watching Remo land, and our actions will speak louder than our words,” the statement concluded.
The SYA reaffirmed its pledge to remain steadfast in promoting peace, progress, and unity in Remo land, regardless of political affiliations or election outcomes.
