…Opposition party People’s Democratic Party (PDP) warns against threats to traditional institutions, pledges respect for royal fathers

The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticised Governor Dapo Abiodun over alleged attempts to coerce traditional rulers into supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming Remo Federal Constituency bye-election.

In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Otunba Arc. Kayode Adebayo, the PDP alleged that Governor Abiodun convened a private meeting on Friday, August 8, 2025, with a number of royal fathers, during which he allegedly warned them of possible dethronement should the APC lose in their respective communities during the August 16 poll.

The party described such an approach as an “unacceptable violation of the political neutrality” expected of custodians of culture and tradition, adding that monarchs should serve as impartial leaders who command the confidence of all citizens regardless of political leanings.

“Our traditional rulers are fathers to everyone, not instruments of partisan campaigns. Attempting to use intimidation to influence their stance undermines the dignity of the crown and is contrary to democratic norms,” the statement read.

The PDP accused the governor of showing “consistent disregard for the sanctity and independence of the traditional institution,” noting that such alleged conduct from a self-acclaimed prince was especially disappointing.

“Since taking office under controversial circumstances, Mr. Abiodun has displayed a troubling tendency to politicise and weaken respected institutions,” the PDP asserted. “The throne must be protected from political manipulation and desperation.”

The opposition further faulted the APC for failing to rein in the governor, saying the ruling party had a duty to advise him against actions that could escalate political tensions and erode public trust.

“As the bye-election approaches, Ogun people must be free to choose their representatives without fear, coercion, or interference,” the statement continued. “Deploying threats against monarchs sets a dangerous precedent and compromises the integrity of the electoral process.”

The PDP called on “all well-meaning citizens, opinion leaders, and democratic stakeholders” to resist any attempt to reduce royal fathers to political agents, warning that sustained interference could irreparably damage the traditional system.

While expressing solidarity with the monarchs reportedly subjected to such pressure, the PDP reassured them of its “unwavering respect and partnership,” promising to always uphold the sanctity of their office and prioritise their welfare.

The party concluded by stating that no level of intimidation, manipulation, or political scheming could prevent the APC from facing defeat in the August 16 poll.

The Remo Federal Constituency bye-election has generated significant political attention in Ogun State, with both major parties intensifying their campaigns in the closing days before the vote.
