“We Chose ADC To Rescue Nigerians From APC’s Misrule” — David Mark Leads Opposition Coalition

Former Senate President, Senator David Mark, has officially announced the adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the political platform of the National Coalition of Political Opposition Movements in Nigeria, which he now leads. This strategic realignment, according to Mark, is the first major step in what he described as “a determined mission to reclaim Nigeria and restore true democratic governance.”

At a high-profile press conference held in Abuja on Wednesday, Senator Mark delivered a stirring address titled “Adoption of African Democratic Congress”, outlining the coalition’s vision to confront and unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

“We are gathered here this afternoon in pursuit of our shared mission to rescue our country and save our hard-won democracy,” the former military governor stated. “This marks the beginning of what we know will be a long, difficult, and tedious journey. But we are prepared, united in our belief that no sacrifice is too great in the service of our fatherland.”

From PDP to ADC: A Political Shift with National Implications

In a personally signed earlier statement made available to journalists, Senator Mark confirmed his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking an end to his decades-long association with the main opposition party. He also announced his assumption of leadership as Interim National Chairman of ADC, succeeding the party’s long-time leader, Chief Ralph Nwosu.

The ADC’s interim leadership now includes a former Governor of Osun State and ex-ally of President Tinubu, who has been appointed as the party’s interim national secretary—signaling a broad-based political reconfiguration across regional and ideological lines.

“We Must Resist a Civilian Dictatorship” — Mark Warns

Mark did not mince words in his criticism of the current APC-led administration. He accused the Tinubu government of undermining democratic institutions, weakening the legislature, and driving Nigeria toward a de facto one-party state.

“All democratic institutions have been hijacked, sending our country on a slow descent into civilian dictatorship. The blatant destabilization and infiltration of major opposition parties aim to achieve only one thing: complete state capture and the removal of electoral choice in 2027.”

He also expressed grave concern over worsening national security, economic hardship, and rising corruption, lamenting the “total abandonment of governance in favor of endless politicking.”

A Broad-Based Coalition of Patriots

The newly formed coalition, according to Senator Mark, is made up of opposition political parties, civil society groups, youth organizations, and other progressive forces across the country. He emphasized that their alliance is not merely about seizing political power but about rebuilding Nigeria’s failing democratic architecture.

“This coalition exists to stop Nigeria’s descent into a one-party state. We must speak with one voice to defend our democracy and protect the rights of every Nigerian.”

Speculations Mount Over 2027 Presidential Candidate

Shortly after the ADC’s adoption, photos surfaced online showing former Vice President Atiku Abubakar receiving former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, at his residence. The meeting has since sparked speculation that the coalition might settle on Peter Obi as its presidential flagbearer for 2027—potentially positioning him to complete the South’s remaining four-year tenure before power rotates to the North in 2031.

While no official endorsement has been made, political analysts suggest this potential arrangement could be a strategic masterstroke to unify opposition forces and appeal across regional divides.

Will Dumebi Kachikwu Run Again?

Questions remain about whether Dumebi Kachikwu, the ADC’s 2023 presidential candidate, will seek the party’s ticket again or step aside in favor of a consensus candidate. Party insiders suggest internal consultations are ongoing.

Meanwhile, social media has been abuzz with congratulatory messages, including a viral Facebook post that read:

“JUST IN: Sen. David Mark takes over as Interim National Chairman of the ADC. The Coalition transition has started. Congrats, Nigeria! Urban and rural banditry will be extinguished by God’s grace in 2027.”

As the political climate in Nigeria begins to shift ahead of the 2027 elections, Senator David Mark’s emergence as the face of a revitalized opposition movement under the ADC banner marks a new chapter in the country’s evolving democratic struggle. Whether this coalition will have the strength and structure to truly challenge the APC juggernaut remains to be seen.
