The Executive Chairman of Sagamu Local Government Area, Ogbeni Jubril O. Odulate, has reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to improving the welfare of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving within the council area.

The assurance came during a strategic meeting with Mrs. Mogbojuri Olushola, the Local Government Inspector for NYSC in Sagamu, who visited the chairman’s office to discuss critical issues affecting corps members’ service delivery.

Mrs. Olushola emphasized the need for creating an enabling environment that allows corps members to discharge their duties without impediments. She stressed the importance of seamless mobility for the youth servants within the local government boundaries and called for enhanced security measures.

“Our corps members possess tremendous potential to drive meaningful change in their host communities when they operate in conducive environments and receive appropriate respect,” the NYSC official stated during the meeting.

A key highlight of the discussion was the proposed reactivation of the dormant NYSC Local Government Committee. Mrs. Olushola explained that this statutory body plays a crucial role in ensuring effective integration of corps members into community development initiatives.

The committee, she noted, serves as a bridge between the youth servants and their host communities, maximizing their impact through structured engagement programs.

Chairman Odulate’s response demonstrated his administration’s proactive approach to youth welfare. He revealed that Sagamu Local Government had previously constructed accommodation facilities for corps members at the Local Government Quarters, addressing one of the primary concerns raised.

Furthermore, he confirmed that corps members employed by the local government receive the approved minimum wage in addition to their federal monthly stipend, setting a benchmark for other councils.

To facilitate community development activities, the chairman immediately approved the use of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Hall for corps members’ general Community Development Service meetings.

The Sagamu model appears to be raising the bar for local government support of the NYSC program. Unlike many councils that provide minimal support, Sagamu’s comprehensive approach includes:

– Purpose-built accommodation facilities

– Competitive remuneration packages

– Dedicated meeting venues for community service activities

– Commitment to addressing emerging welfare concerns

Mrs. Olushola expressed appreciation for the chairman’s receptive approach and the tangible support already provided. She acknowledged the positive impact of existing initiatives while emphasizing the potential for even greater collaboration.

The meeting concluded with assurances that outstanding issues would be systematically addressed, signaling a strengthened partnership between the NYSC and Sagamu Local Government.

This collaboration is expected to enhance the effectiveness of corps members’ community service projects and improve their overall service experience. With proper support structures in place, the youth servants are better positioned to contribute meaningfully to Sagamu’s development agenda.

The partnership model established in Sagamu could serve as a template for other local government areas seeking to optimize the benefits of the NYSC program while ensuring participants have fulfilling service experiences.
