Flood Hits Ode Remo As Drainage Failure Undermines Under-construction Road Project

What began as a transformative road dualization project in the Agbero–Oke Ola axis of Ode Remo has taken a troubling turn, as torrential rains on Saturday morning submerged large portions of the area, leaving residents stranded and properties at risk.

The flooding, which locals say is becoming a recurring nightmare, is attributed to the absence of a functional and properly channeled drainage system along the under-construction roadway. Blocked water pathways and lack of adequate water exit points have turned the ambitious infrastructure project into an environmental hazard.

Eyewitnesses described how homes, shops, and access roads were overwhelmed within hours of rainfall, with some residents forced to evacuate their homes. The lack of preemptive measures and effective site supervision has raised questions about the execution of the project, which was initially hailed as a long-awaited step toward development.

Despite the setback, residents expressed appreciation for the efforts of the Ogun State Government under the leadership of His Excellency, Prince Dr. Dapo Abiodun, MFR, whose administration has championed various development initiatives across the state. However, they are calling for swift corrective action to prevent further disasters.

Community leaders and affected citizens are now urging the state government to summon the contractors responsible for the project and ensure the immediate incorporation of a dual drainage system on both sides of the road. Experts warn that failure to address the issue urgently could lead to recurring losses, including damage to infrastructure, erosion, and threats to human life.

“We cannot afford to trade safety for progress,” said one concerned resident. “Development is welcome, but it must be done with proper planning and community safety in mind.”

The unfolding situation in Agbero Oke-Ola serves as a stark reminder of the importance of environmental impact assessments and community-inclusive planning in public infrastructure projects.

As the rainy season sets in, many are hopeful that the state authorities will respond swiftly to mitigate the risk of future flooding — ensuring that the promise of progress does not come at the peril of the people.
