Flight Operations To Resume At Renamed Bola Ahmed Tinubu Int’l Airport In Minna April 23

Flight operations are set to recommence at the newly renamed Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport in Minna, Niger State, on April 23, 2025.
This announcement was made by Festus Keyamo, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, via his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday. The development follows a strategic collaboration between the Niger State Government and Overland Airways to improve regional connectivity and economic activity.
Originally known as the Abubakar Imam International Airport, the facility was renamed in March 2024 by Niger State Governor Umar Bago in honour of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. According to Aminu TakumaAminu Takuma, Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment in Niger State, the decision to rename the airport recognizes the president’s significant contributions to the state’s development.

The renaming aligns with a broader federal initiative launched in 2023 to honor notable Nigerian leaders by naming key aviation infrastructure after them. As part of this reform, several airports across the country were renamed — including those in Maiduguri and Ibadan, which were named after former President Muhammadu Buhari and the late Premier of the Western Region, Samuel Ladoke Akintola, respectively.
Before its recent renaming, the Minna airport bore the name of Abubakar Imam, a distinguished journalist and writer credited with establishing the first Hausa-language newspaper in Northern Nigeria.
Officials say the airport’s reopening will boost commercial activity in Niger State and contribute to the ongoing transformation in the country’s aviation sector.
