State Creation: Ijebu Youths Call For Unity, Urge Leaders To Speak With One Voice

The Ijebu-Remo Progressive Youths Organisation (IREYPO) has called for unity among elders championing the creation of a new state from Ogun State, emphasizing that a collective approach is crucial for success.

At its maiden general assembly held on Sunday, March 2, at Home Base Hotel, Ijari, Ijebu-Ode, youth coordinators from the six local government areas of Ijebuland gathered to strategize on the way forward. The forum stressed the need for leaders from both Ijebu and Remo, which make up Ogun East Senatorial District, to align their efforts and present a united front in the ongoing agitation.

The call for unity comes amid differing approaches from regional leaders. The Remo Committee on State Creation, established by the Akarigbo and Paramount Ruler of Remoland, HRM Oba (Dr.) Babatunde Adewale Ajayi, CON, recently submitted its proposal advocating for Remo-Ijebu State, with Sagamu as the proposed capital. However, the Ijebu State Creation Committee, set up by the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, Ogbagba II, is yet to submit its report.

Speaking at the gathering, IREYIPO Coordinator, Akogun Jamiu Alabi Olododo, underscored the importance of unity in achieving the long-anticipated dream of statehood.

“Progress cannot be made without a consensus. Our collective voice is essential in ensuring that our demand for state creation is taken seriously at the national level. While our elders are making commendable efforts, it is our duty to rally behind them and push forward with a singular purpose,” he stated.

Olododo also lauded the contributions of political stakeholders, particularly Senator Gbenga Daniel and House of Representatives members from Ogun East, for their efforts in advancing the cause. However, he urged for more coordinated action, stressing that the movement is at a decisive stage where unity is non-negotiable.

The youth organization firmly believes that a disjointed approach could weaken their chances, while a synchronized effort between Ijebu and Remo leaders would significantly enhance the prospect of achieving state creation.

As the agitation gains momentum, all eyes are now on Ijebuland’s leadership to finalize and present its proposal, ensuring that both blocs speak with one voice to strengthen their position on the national stage.
