Nigeria Mourns As Deputy Chief Whip, Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga, Passes Away At 59

Abuja, January 15, 2025 – The National Assembly has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga Oriyomi, Ijaya as fondly called, the Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives and a prominent voice in Ogun State politics. She passed away earlier today, January 15, 2025, after a brief illness.

Hon. Onanuga, fondly called Ijaya by her admirers, represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Born on December 2, 1965, she was celebrated for her unwavering commitment to public service and her trailblazing role in championing women’s empowerment and social development.

First elected in 2019, she quickly made her mark as the Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development during the 9th Assembly, where she initiated impactful policies aimed at uplifting women and vulnerable groups. Her re-election in 2023 saw her rise to the prestigious role of Deputy Chief Whip in the 10th Assembly, a position she held with grace, discipline, and excellence.
