The newly elected President General of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo faction, Jackson Omenazu, has in a bold and emotional declaration, pledged to sacrifice his personal freedom to secure the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Omenazu made the statement during his inaugural address, emphasizing that the liberation of Kanu is essential for the restoration of peace and stability in the Southeast.

“I am resolutely ready to trade my liberty, my freedom, and even my life in pursuit of the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” Omenazu affirmed.

Omenazu outlined a comprehensive strategy to intensify efforts toward Kanu’s release, highlighting the following initiatives:

Religious Collaborations: Partnering with Christian, Muslim, traditional, and Jewish communities across Igbo land to unify spiritual efforts.

Monthly Prayers: Designating the last weekends of every month in 2025 as sacred days for collective prayers and supplications to seek divine intervention.

Diplomatic Engagements: Adopting innovative and discreet diplomatic tactics, inspired by the Yoruba leadership’s success in securing Sunday Igboho’s release.

Appeal to President Tinubu: Directly calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to listen to the Igbo people’s plea, while personally vouching for Kanu’s conduct post-release.

Omenazu described his leadership as one driven by sacrifice rather than self-interest. He declared his commitment to unite the Igbo people and prioritize justice over fear.

“We must not allow fear to get in the way of our collective responsibility. The plea for Kanu’s freedom is a plea for peace, justice, and reconciliation,” Omenazu said.

The Ohanaeze leader urged all Igbo citizens, leaders, and individuals of goodwill to rally behind the cause, drawing inspiration from the sacrifices of their ancestors who fought for freedom and rights.

“We acknowledge the power of unity and diplomacy. Let us not shy away from this noble endeavor. Together, we can secure justice and peace for our homeland,” Omenazu emphasized.

Citing the Yoruba leadership’s efforts in securing Sunday Igboho’s freedom, Omenazu called for a similar approach in Kanu’s case. He reiterated the need for bold actions and strategic unity, vowing to lead the charge with unwavering dedication.

The declaration has sparked widespread reactions, with many viewing it as a new chapter in the quest for peace and justice in the Southeast. As the last weekends of January 2025 approach, eyes will be on Omenazu and his leadership to see how these bold promises translate into action.
