In a historic ceremony held at the Sito Gbethrome community along the Semé expressway, the Aholu of Kweme Kingdom, Oba Sejiro James, installed Mohammed Umar as the Seriki Fulani of Badagry. The event, attended by prominent Fulani socio-cultural organizations from the South-West and Benin Republic, marks a significant step towards fostering harmony between pastoralists and farmers in the region.

While presenting the traditional staff and beads to the new leader, Oba Sejiro James underscored the importance of the role in maintaining peace and resolving conflicts.

“Though the stool you are on is high, you have been endorsed by God today, and He will guard you,” the monarch declared, urging Umar to appoint representatives across Badagry communities to ensure effective governance.

Key speakers at the event included Saidu Yusuf, APC chairman for Arewa communities in Lagos, who called for unity between Fulani and Yoruba groups to drive development beyond politics. Mohammed Laba, the Seriki Fulani of Abeokuta and chairman of Meyiti Allah in the South-West, emphasized the role of traditional leadership in conflict resolution, while Aminu Dogara, chairman of the Arewa Council of Chiefs in Lagos, reaffirmed his people’s commitment to the welfare of all residents.

In his inaugural address, Seriki Mohammed Umar pledged to prioritize pressing issues such as poverty alleviation, education, and healthcare within his community. “I will work tirelessly to address our challenges and foster peace in Badagry,” he assured.

The installation has been lauded as a step forward in bridging cultural divides and promoting unity in Badagry’s diverse communities.
