In a surprising turn of events, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has extended an olive branch to protesters against the President Bola Tinubu administration, inviting them for dialogue. This comes after Wike’s earlier threat to restrict protesters in Abuja, sparking concerns about the government’s commitment to freedom of expression.

On Thursday, while presenting staff of office to four newly appointed chiefs in the territory, Wike commended protesters in the FCT for being non-violent and urged them to continue to resist those who want to destroy the nation.

He emphasized that Abuja, as the nation’s capital, remains a precious asset to the country, and if destroyed, it will have negative consequences on the entire country.

Wike’s earlier threat to restrict protesters had sparked widespread criticism, with many accusing him of trying to stifle dissenting voices. However, his latest call for dialogue has raised hopes that the government may be willing to listen to the grievances of the protesters.

“We are ready to listen to them and also walk them through some governance issues that they may not have been privy to,” Wike said, in a statement that marks a significant shift in tone from his earlier stance.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether Wike’s call for dialogue will be genuine or just a tactic to appease the protesters. One thing is certain, however – the eyes of the nation are on Wike and the government to see if they will truly engage with the protesters or continue to pay lip service to the idea of dialogue.
