The Ogun State flood recently has left a trail of destruction and displacement in its wake, with three local government areas bearing the brunt of the disaster. Sagamu, Abeokuta North, and Ijebu-Ode have been identified as the most affected areas, with residents counting their losses and calling for urgent government intervention.

In Sagamu, the flooding has submerged several homes and businesses, leaving hundreds of residents displaced. The area’s major roads have been turned into rivers, making it difficult for people to move around. “We have lost everything,” said Mrs. Funke Adeoye, a resident of Sagamu. “Our homes, our businesses, everything is gone. We need the government’s help to rebuild our lives.”

Abeokuta North, which is home to the Oyan River Dam, has also been severely affected. The dam’s water release has been blamed for the flooding of nearby communities, with residents accusing the government of neglecting their warnings. “We told them to release the water gradually, but they refused,” said Mr. Olawale Olaleye, a resident of Abeokuta North. “Now, our homes are underwater, and we have nowhere to go.”

Ijebu-Ode, another local government area affected by the flooding, has seen its major markets and roads submerged. Traders and artisans have lost their goods and equipment, with many calling for government support to revive their businesses. “The flooding has destroyed our livelihoods,” said Mrs. Taiwo Ogunbi, a trader in Ijebu-Ode. “We need the government’s help to get back on our feet.”

The Ogun State government has promised to provide relief materials and support to the affected areas, but residents are calling for more concrete actions to prevent future flooding. “We need a permanent solution, not just relief materials,” said Mr. Olaleye. “We need the government to fix our drainage systems and prevent this from happening again.”
