I Was Never Detained, I Went To Police Headquarters On My Free Volition – Adebutu

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Ogun state, Hon. Ladi Adebutu, has denied arrest, detainment by the Nigeria Police.

Adebutu on Wednesday morning visited the state Police command, Eleweran, Abeokuta to clear allegations of money laundering and vote-buying leveled against him by the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Recalling that the PDP candidate had left the country after the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police in Abeokuta, in a letter dated May 16, 2023 and signed by Muhammed Babakura, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, invited him to respond to a case of conspiracy, electoral offences and money laundering received from the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) of the Federation.

Honourable Ladi Adebutu, who recently returned to the country after an eight-month medical vacation abroad, arrived the Police headquarters at exactly 11:10am and went straight to the office of the Commissioner of Police, CP Abiodun Alamutu.

Our reporter who captured the visitation reports that, after 24minutes meeting with the Commissioner of Police, Hon. Adebutu went to the office of Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (CIID).

Addressing journalists shortly after the visit, Adebutu commended the Police force for upholding the tenet of Nigeria’s democracy.

Clad in white Agbada regalia, cheerful Adebutu who was accompanied by chieftains of the party including Otunba Segun Showunmi, the PDP State secretary, Dr. Sunday Solarin and his aides said the visit was to clear some allegations leveled against him the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

According to him, he was at the Police headquarters on his free volition and he was never detained.

He said, “I’ve come to visit the CP for Merry Christmas and New Year on arrival from my brief sojourn abroad, I find it necessary to come and pay my courtesy to a very strong institution an important institution of our democracy. So, I said let me go and visit the Nigerian police force, more so that some funny innuendos have been going around.”

“So I came here on my free volition to clear any frivolous petitions written by the APC and I’ve come and I’m happy that this institution has done well. They have listened and they have taken records and I’m sure this is the way to a better Nigeria.”

Speaking on the accusation of money laundering, Adebutu noted that, he cannot be charged for using his personal wealth to better the lives of this people through empowerment.

He said, “The frivolous allegations is that Ladi Adebutu has been laundering his money. I don’t know how you can launder your personal wealth. That’s the allegation against me by the APC. That I’ve used my money to create empowerment for people that I feel compassionately about.

Nigerians that are in need, that I have helped, that I will continue to help, especially when on this occasion. It was advised by my late mother to be of help to women and children.

“But because these people lacked empathy, APC government lacked compassion for the society, they trivialized and politicized everything. They have learnt to weaponize poverty and when they see anybody moving away from such situation, they politicized it.

“I’m back in the country and I await them. All they were doing to disrupt the normal process of electioneering, we had elections and the matter went through the courts, but that process they tried to truncate, to make sure the process would not be truncated we had to arrange our movement, the matter has arrived at the Supreme Court and we are certain that we shall get justice. What they are hiding and acting so desperately about, we shall continue to follow the process and we believe that the institutions of Nigeria shall protect us.”
