MC Oluomo Returns Lagos NURTW Chairman

Lagos State chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly called MC Oluomo, has been re-elected.

Akinsanya, Alhaji Sulyman Ojora (Deputy Chairman); Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle (Treasurer) and 20 other executive members were elected unopposed on Thursday at the 10th quadrennial state delegates conference held at the union’s secretariat in Agege.

They were sworn in by the Principal, Excel Practitioners, Adejare Kembi, in the presence of the acting National President of the union, Alhaji Aliyu Issa Ore; former National Secretary, Kabiru Ado Yau; Controller, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Lagos Office, Eshomounu Itemoagbo; Assistant Chief Labour Officer in the ministry, Anthony Ogwu; the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Lagos State Public Relations Officer, Ismail Adejumo, among others.

Akinsanya thanked the Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; the Ore-led national body of the union and other stakeholders for standing by him during a recent crisis.

He commended members of the union in the state for their perseverance and loyalty to him as their leader. He promised more assistance for the union members.

Akinsanya also vowed to continue his reform policies which he said have transformed the union’s activities in the state.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by a director in the state Ministry of Transportation, Lateef Tiamiyu, hailed the union members for re-electing Akinsanya.

He praised Akinsanya’s leadership qualities and ability to reform the union’s activities in the state.

According to the governor, gone are the days when NURTW members took to violence to effect leadership change. He implored them to continue to support government policies.

Itemoagbo described Akinsanya’s employment of about 123 graduates to work in various units of the union as commendable.

He promised that the ministry would continue to partner the Akinsanya-led union to ensure that more people are employed in the union.

Acting National President of the union, Alhaji Ore hailed the emergence of Akinsanya and other executive members and urged them to show leadership, capacity and sacrifice in the course of their service.

According to him, leadership and followership must work harmoniously to turn the union’s fortune around.

“Those elected must carry others along. I therefore urge you all to try as much as possible to run an open administration that will be devoid of victimisation. Be committed to fairness, equity and justice so that unity and harmony will prevail among members of this great union at the various levels,” he said.

The state Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, who was represented by Olatunji Oladimeji, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), commended Akinsanya and called for stronger collaboration between the police and the union.
