EXCLUSIVE: How 27-Year Old PDP Candidate Won House Of Representatives Seat In Kebbi

Ibrahim Bello Muhammad is the best case study of the “not too young to rule” in Nigeria. The newly elected House of Representatives member for Kebbi State has breaks record in the political space and will be so far the Nigeria’s youngest Federal Lawmaker.

Muhammad was elected under the umbrella of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Saturday presidential and national assembly elections from the Birnin Kebbi, Kalgo, and Bunza Federal constituencies.

Fortune or Fortress?

Our investigation reveals that he was not the initial clincher of the party’s ticket.

27-year-old Muhammad elected House of Reps member in Kebbi He replaced his brother, Abba Bello Muhammad, who died on January 3, 2023, a few days before the 2023 general elections.

Al-Mustapha Abubakar, one of the proud voters who cast his vote for the would-be lawmaker, voted for him out of pity and for the youth’s golden opportunity to serve.

“It is interesting to see something like this happening in the north where they think we do not have political enlightenment.

“It is a political statement of pride for us here”, he added, basking in the euphoria of the victory.

Sources told The Eaglesforesight correspondent that even though the son of a former PDP National Chairman and Former Minister of Communication and Defence, Dr Bello Haliru Muhammad, was unpopular before the election, the circumstances surrounding his emergence endeared him to the people in the constituency.

The record book

When sworn in, Bello at just 27 years old will displace Gabriel Saleh Zock, who became a lawmaker at 34 years.

The former holder of the record, Gabriel Saleh Zock of the All Progressives Congress, was born on November 20, 1985.

He represented the Kachial/Kagarko Federal Constituency of Kaduna State and is currently the youngest lawmaker in the House of Representatives.

We asked the people what they expect from their new record breaker; Abduljabbar Musa told our reporter that they would want him to embody the yearnings of an average Nigerian youth.

“We want change. We all desire progressive change. We are positive that his victory would set the ground for inclusive politics”, he added.

Amina Mohammed, a 27-year-old graduate of Mathematics, said she sees the victory as a motivation to women, girls, and people living with disabilities that they could also prosper in Nigeria’s developing political space.

“For me, I am happy that the least expected winner emerged.

“He would not believe he would match to the green chamber most spectacularly.

“The victory is for the youths, women, and people living with disabilities aspiring for political offices.”
