BREAKING: Ogun Flood Sweeps Away Three, One Reportedly Dead, Two Rescued Sustain Injuries In Sagamu

The heavy downpour in Ogun state today has resulted to flooding in some parts of Sagamu Local Government Area.

An eyewitness revealed to the Eaglesforesight correspondent that; Isale-Ojumele, Awolowo market areas are the most affected place every year during downpour.

Vehicles and motorcycles do find it difficult to navigate from those areas whenever there’s heavy downpour. While those who always attempted to move their cars in the heavy flood do got their cars trapped.

Shop and store owners in the area do also stay at alert while some will close their operations and ran for safety.

An eyewitness reported to The Eaglesforesight that the victim alleged to be a student of Ayodele School (either it’s primary or secondary is not yet confirmed as at the time of filing this report) due to the uniform sighted on the bereaved.

Eaglesforesight correspondent was able to captured another victim of the flood that was rescued alive but the motorcycle was dugged in the drainage beside The King’s Hotel off AUD primary school along Awolowo road in Makun Area of the town.

To reminds the state government through his commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya of his promise, below partly stated his statement last year; where the state government in Ogun some time in February last year, where the government had once said it would continue to take adequate measures to mitigate incidences of flooding to check its negative impacts.

Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya listed the measures to include: construction of drainage channels at the appropriate places and clearing of blocked drains.

“Our dredgers are right now working in several areas like Arepo and Obafemi-Owode Local Government area to open up the downstream and to make sure that water that comes from the flood have a way to drain off.

“If you go round the state now, you will see that we are opening all the tertiary and secondary drainages. We are opening them in almost all the local government areas right now.

“We have also embarked on channelisation, by way of river engineering to widen and deepen our rivers to increase their capacities for flow volume at specific sections,” he said.

According to him, the state government, through its advocacy programme, had consistently appealed to citizens on the need to always take precautionary measures to control flooding.

“We have also talked to residents of Eruwuru in Sagamu, Ijamode, Isaka and Owode-Yewa in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government areas.

“We have used different platforms, including jingles, seminars and advertisements to urge farmers along the coastal areas and riverbanks to take advantage of the weather outlook and plan the planting and harvesting properly to prevent damages to their crops and livestock,” he said.

The state government, Oresanya said, had also taken steps to improve waste management across the council areas through its Public Private Partnership (PPP).

He said that the ministry had also partnered with chairmen and other leaders of various Community Development Associations (CDAs) to prevent indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the drainage channels to avoid blockage.

The commissioner explained further that the state government would continue to monitor water levels of the dams, including the Oyan Dam, to know the appropriate time to open them up in order to prevent flooding.

On Ecological Fund, Oresanya said that the state has not received any ecological fund since the inception of the Dapo Abiodun-led administration in 2019.

He, however, disclosed that the state government officials and members of the Presidential Committee on Flooding recently embarked on a fact-finding visit to some parts of the state prone to flooding.

“We went down to areas where we often experienced disasters in the state during heavy rains.

“We took them round the projects that needed ecological fund and these projects would soon be documented and submitted to the appropriate quarters for appropriate funding. So, we have dialogue going on,” he said.

The attentions of the general public is hereby called to the flood victim’s at ogunyanwo street makun sagamu beside aud primary school, that the family of the little boy is yet to be identify, incase if there’s any useful information about him, the person should contact Awolowo police station in Sagamu.

However till the time of filing this report, no traces of efforts had been put in places to curbed the effects of these unfortunate incidents almost every year. The Eaglesforesight learnt.

On way forward, the residents of the affected areas had called for the Federal Government through State Government ably led by Prince Dapo Abiodun to come to their aides.

Going forward, they lamented and called upon their Senate, Senator Lekan Mustapha, House of Rep member, Otunba Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga Ijaya, the Local Government Chairman, Ogbeni Odulate Afolabi, the royal father, His Royal Majesty, Oba Adewale Babatunde Ajayi, the Akarigbo and Paramount Ruler of Remo Land, the both Sagamu Constituency 1(Honourable Segun Shitta) and 2 Assembly (Hon. Adeniran Adeyinka Sapele) candidates.
