Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki announced on Friday that his administration had introduced AL modalities to deliver a world-class library that would be made accessible to Edo schoolchildren.

The library, Obaseki said, would contain 50 million books of academic material when completed

Governor Obaseki stated this at the Education Hub groundbreaking ceremony held at the Edo State Ministry of Education in Iyaro, Benin Edo.

The governor said the proposed building remained one of the failures of the system and that transforming the system without repairing the structure would not be good for development in the industry.

“We are here today at the groundbreaking ceremony of the education center, but coming here reminds us that education in Edo state has been demolished, just like all this building. Deterioration in education in Edo State is consistent with the kind of deterioration you see in this building on this property.

“As a government, we would not have completed that our work has transformed the education system and left behind this infrastructure that would govern and regulate the sector. In order to fulfill that we have accomplished our mission in education, we must rebuild this education center.

“The Library Board will have a building in the Education Hub. In May of this year, we would open a branch of the library in Edo Mall. You cannot open a branch without a head office. We are rebuilding our library system with titles of at least 50 million titles. We are converting our library system into a digital system across the state.

“This allows our children across the state to log into Edo Library to view and read world-class books. It will be a world-class library board and library system.

“It will also have Ministry of Education offices, build new SUBEB offices, a Secondary School Education Board. We focus on the decoupling of Junior from Senior Secondary School.

“Technical education offices, which is now a priority in the state, will be at the center of attention because we want as many children as possible to have the skills to do crafts to feed themselves, even if they cannot continue their education. The Bureau for Quality Assurance will also be there when the children go to school, but no one to guarantee the quality in our schools

“We are building three schools within this hub and their playground. We would have Primary 1 to 6, JSS 1 to 3 and SS 1 to 3. This will be one of our ambitious projects and will bring you back here in May 2024 next year. We don’t like commissioned projects, but we would do this on commission.

“We would ensure that the world class is supported by world class facilities by building a conference center that can accommodate a minimum of 500 people at a time. Build a cafeteria and restaurants for workers,” the governor assured.

According to him, “To run education well, you have to create the infrastructure that would help you run education, including the buildings, offices, our leaders did that 50 years ago, we shouldn’t grieve, but repair and give hope for the next generation.

“The world has recognized what we are doing in our education system as the economy of London wrote an article about education this week and referenced what we are doing in Edo State”.

Obaseki, who said his government had continued to invest in education, stressed the responsibility of a collective responsible to support the investment and never allow those without capacity and those unprepared to lead, in get close to the government”.

“We let those without capacity rule, which is why we are in this situation as a nation,” Obaseki lamented.

Speaking on the occasion, Education Commissioner Dr Joan Osa Oviawe described the Education Hub projects as huge, pointing out that those who feared the governor could complete it before he leaves office in 2024.

“This project is the brainchild of Mr. Governor. I want to assure you that this project, the Education Hub, will be completed before the governor leaves. We will all come here before the November project to commission this project to the delight of the people of the state.

“Education is important for the development of the state. We need the support of all of us to ensure quality education for all Edo children. I urge all parents to ensure that all our special children receive the necessary education to help them through life,” pleaded Oviawe.
