The University of Al Quaraouiyine in Fez, Morocco is the oldest university not only in Africa, but in the whole world.

First founded as a mosque by Fatima Al-Fihri, the university was established in 859 AD and subsequently became a place of learning and one of the world’s foremost Islamic spiritual and educational centers.

Some of these university alumni include; geographer Muhammad Al-Idrisi and the Jewish philosophical writer Maimonides.
