Kogi registers 6 cases of Lassa fever

Kogi State Ministry of Health director of disease control, Dr. Austin Ojotule, announced on Friday that the state has recorded six cases of Lassa fever.

He said each of the state’s 21 local government areas has basic health care facilities and enough staff to handle heat-related illness cases.

“There are also tertiary health facilities in Lokoja and in Anyigba, and zonal hospitals in each of the state’s three senatorial districts that can easily treat illnesses,” he added.

He added that the government had put in place machines to deal with the outbreak of heat-related illnesses such as meningitis, cholera, measles, diphtheria and lassa fever.

“As it stands, we are dealing with six cases of Lassa fever in the state, but the situation is under control,” he said.

“The good thing about it is that we have not recorded any deaths and we are treating those affected and preventing further spread of the disease… ministry for analyzes to enable us to fight the disease effectively and efficiently.

“Apart from Lassa fever, there is no other disease outbreak. For now, Kogi has no cases of diphtheria, cholera, meningitis and measles, which are heat-related illnesses,” he said.

He added that the ministry was strongly raising public awareness of the need to pay attention and be aware of their surroundings and to immediately report any sign or symptom of illness to the nearest hospital.

He advised residents to take their personal and environmental hygiene seriously to prevent an outbreak of disease.
