Product Disposal: FCTA swears sanctions against erroneous gas stations

The Director General of FCT Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Abbas Idriss, has warned that gas stations risk sanctions and loss of operating licenses if they continue to violate safety standards for offloading products.

He added that they could also be forced to pay damages to a third party whose property is compromised as a result of their negligence.

Idriss issued the warning while speaking to reporters in Abuja, where he revealed that the FCT minister, Mallam Muhammad Bello, was concerned about the increasing number of fires in gas stations and had indicated that such gas stations should be sanctioned for breaking the laws that their business.

The FEMA boss also said the FCT administration was working with the Upstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission and other stakeholders to ensure strict compliance with product disposal regulations.

He stressed that no gas station should discharge petroleum products at high temperatures to avoid fire.

Idriss also condemned the recent attack on firefighters while fighting the Enyo gas station fire, describing it as unacceptable.

He said the FCTA is putting in place modalities to ensure gas stations have civil liability insurance and maintain the minimum standard of fire protection equipment, as well as the adequate training of staff on safety precautions.

The DG called on residents to always use the free emergency number 112 in case of emergency.
