Yoruba youth tell FG to stop fuel, naira scarcity
Yoruba youth under the auspices of the Yoruba Youth Council (YYC) have directed the Federal Government to end the unnecessary hardships faced by Nigerians due to the newly redesigned Naira notes and fuel scarcity in the country.
The youths who described the situation in the country as unacceptable and no longer tolerable noted that Nigerians are experiencing double hardship as fuel scarcity and new naira bills crippled the country’s socio-economic activities.
The youths said during their speech through YYC leader Eric Oluwole in a statement after the rally that the federal government should end the avoidable, unnecessary, crippling and pain-inducing fuel and naira shortages in the country.
Oluwole noted that if left unaddressed, the situation could be a prelude to revolution, like the #EndSARS demonstrations that sparked socio-economic activities across the country for many days with unwanted consequences.
According to the statement, the majority of the Nigerian people are complaining about the hardship they are facing due to shortage of Naira notes and transactions in the banks and are unable to withdraw the required amount to meet their pressing personal and other needs.
The statement was particularly reminiscent of the now-viral video of a woman who banked naked because she couldn’t get the money.
Oluwole said in the statement: “People are dying in hospital because they cannot get enough money they have in the bank for their health and other maintenance.
“The PoS outlets don’t issue the new banknotes or charge extra money for them and the money isn’t even available”.
However, Oluwole advised the CBN to work hard by circulating more money to the commercial banks and changing the way they operate to ease the hardship.
The statement added that “the worrying scarcity of fuel and exorbitant prices across the country is another issue that also requires urgent attention from the federal government.
“It has brought untold hardship and pain to Nigerians, through the fuel pump price increase from N180 to N450 in South West Nigeria as a case study.
“Transportation costs had tripled while people were forced to trek, both as an exercise regimen and as a way to fill the gap created by unavailable money.
“The situation, which is hardly bearable, is aggravated by the directive on new Naira banknotes as people can hardly find enough money to cover their needs”
Oluwole advised Yoruba youth to keep calm and embrace peace and asked the youth to campaign for “an affiliate group called “Youth Awake Now (YAN) that says this is a group that will change Nigeria forever and next week its will hold the first meeting.
