People’s Redemption Party (PRP) presidential candidate Mr Kola Abiola has said that his priority in the first six months of taking office will be to address the country’s security challenges.

Abiola made the pledge as he addressed supporters at the party’s southern zonal gathering at Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan, on Thursday.

He noted that the nation was facing security challenges because the security architecture was not implemented as enshrined in the nation’s constitution.

He said it was a concern that security agencies were not adhering to their established constitutional responsibilities while the office of the National Security Adviser was not coordinating as expected.

Once security is resolved, Abiola said more people will feel confident to invest in the economy and solve the country’s economic challenges.

After the security check, he said his government will address infrastructure, agriculture, human rights, education and federalism issues.

Abiola said, “No matter how good your policies are, if security isn’t fixed, nothing will work. So we start by facing security. We will solve this in the first half of the year by first using what we have available.

“Let them run as they should run and operate under the current Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. What has happened is that we are not implementing the security architecture as designed in our Constitution.

“You have the police doing VIP services instead of protecting the citizens. You have DSS working instead of doing FBI functions. You have the Office of the National Security Adviser that does not coordinate. Doing all that in the shortest possible time will solve most of our security problems. That gives people confidence to engage in the economy, agriculture. If you don’t fix that security issue, nothing will work. That will be my priority for the first six months.”

He pledged to include and maintain local government autonomy in states.

Chairman, PRP Mr. Falalu Bello said in his remarks that the party formed a government in the old Kaduna and Kano states and provided a remarkable governance that remained a point of reference in the two states.

He said the party had remained consistent over the past 50 years, especially in its determination to deliver the poor.

He described both the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) as birds of the same feather, and said Nigerians had the task of turning their fortunes around in the upcoming election.

Bello took note of the suffering faced by Nigerians and described President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration as a monumental failure.

He instructed Nigerians to take control of their destiny in the next election and to sail away from that of the 1999 APC and PDP, which he said had destroyed lives.

Bello said the party’s presidential and vice-presidential candidate Zego Haruna stood out from other candidates because he was educationally advanced, young and committed to governance that depended on the fear of God.

During the event, the PRP flags were symbolically presented to the candidates for governor, senator, House of Representatives and House of Representatives, a total of 716 candidates across the country.
