Housewife, son beaten to death for meat

A Makurdi Chief Magistrates’ Court, Benue State, on Tuesday ordered that a 40-year-old housewife, Charity Upev, and her son, Tertsea, be returned to prison for alleged wrongful death.

The Nigeria News Agency reported that police charged Charity and her son with criminal conspiracy and wrongful death.

Magistrate Roseline Iyorshe declined their plea.

Iyorshe adjourned the case to February 8 for further hearing and handed over the file.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Inspector Jonah Uletu, told the court that on January 24, the divisional police officer of the ‘E’ Division Police Station, Makurdi, had received information that Charity and her son Fanen, her in-laws who lived with her, had beaten. .

The prosecution said that Charity alleged that her in-laws stole meat from her pot of soup.

Police said Fanen passed out as a result of the beating and was rushed to a hospital, but died while being treated.

The crime, the prosecutor said, violated sections 97 and 222 of the Benue Penal Code, 2004.
