OOU produced 265,000 graduates in 40 years -VC
The Vice Chancellor of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, Prof. Ayodeji Agboola, has said that the state university has produced 265,000 graduates since its establishment 40 years ago.
Agboola said this on Tuesday during a press conference held at the institution on the occasion of the university’s 40th anniversary.
Speaking on the theme of “Lighting the Path to Academic Excellence: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”, the VC said the next five years will be used to consolidate several achievements of past administrations.
Agboola explained that the university, which started with 522 students and four faculties in 1983, has grown to receive 22,000 applicant applications with about 7,000 quotas per year.
He added that OOU, formerly known as Ogun State University, now runs 72 programs, 65 of which are fully accredited by the National University Commission.
The VC also disclosed that between the 2016 and 2021 academic sessions, the institution produced 190 first-class graduates.
While talking about the plans to tackle the number of students dropping out of school, Agboola attributed the development to funding.
He said, “Students dropping out in the institution when we noticed that, we did the SWOT analysis of what happened to them, we came to the realization that the main problem there is the funding, so we instituted immediate funding , but it is of course not possible to take care of them all.
“So in the future we have agreed that we will do work studies where only 500 will be given money because we cannot take care of them all.
“With work studies, we know for sure that the majority of them will be accommodated and that solves the problem.”
