IPOB’s lawyer regrets Kanu’s life-threatening condition
Biafra Indigenous People’s Counsel Ifeanyi Ejiofor has expressed concern at the denial of adequate medical care to his client and leader of the IPOB group, Nnamdi Kanu.
In a letter dated January 30, the lawyer revealed that the DSS has no adequate medical facilities to treat Kanu’s deteriorating health condition or to tend to his left eardrum, which was badly damaged after his ordeal at the hands of his captors.
In the letter, he said: “Today’s visit to our tireless client – Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu – at the DSS Detention Facility, Abuja, where he continues to be unconstitutionally held, was led by our erudite lead attorney – Professor Mike Ozekhome, SAN, CON, OFR.”
“Our tireless lead attorney took the opportunity to discuss Onyendu’s current state of health. Onyendu carefully told him about not providing proper medical care for the barrage of life-threatening illnesses he faces.
“Very concerning is the fact that the DSS does not have adequate medical facilities to treat Onyendu’s deteriorating health condition.”
“Onyendu was seriously complaining about severe pains, especially in his left ear. He also said that an earlier scan requested by the SSS revealed that he had to undergo an advanced surgical procedure to repair his left eardrum, which had been severely damaged by the severe torture and beatings he received from federal government agents when he was taken into custody. forcibly kidnapped in Kenya and brutally returned to Nigeria in June 2021.”
“Overall, Onyendu is in urgent need of advanced medical treatment and surgical interventions to address his deteriorating health condition, especially on his left ear.”
“He related how the DSS doctor had emphatically told him that if after 45 days from November 18, 2022, when he was examined, his condition had not improved, he would have to undergo immediate surgery to save the remains of his left ear.”
“He lamented that several reminders and requests that the DSS carry out their own doctor’s instructions met with a brick wall.”
“Because he was held in solitary confinement, the DSS also flatly denied him access to his private physician for an independent medical assessment, as ordered by the court.”
Also, Ifeanyi stated that the leader of the legal team, Mike Ozekhome, has taken action against any eventuality.
“Our legal Iroko, Ozekhome, has meticulously taken extensive notes of Onyendu’s medical concerns and has taken immediate action with full legal initiatives to prevent adverse events.”
“The man of letters devoted quality time to his briefing with Onyendu, updating Onyendu on the current status of our appeal to the Supreme Court, which the federal government is deliberately delaying.”
In addition, the letter revealed that the lawsuit forcing the Department of State Services and its director general to allow Kanu access to his medical team and records will be billed this week to the Federal Supreme Court, Abuja.
