INEC investigates alleged demand of N1,000 for PVC
The Independent National Electoral Commission said on Monday it had launched an investigation into the alleged extortion of registered voters in Enugu by one of its associates in the ongoing collection of permanent voter cards.
In a video that has now gone viral, an unidentified INEC official was seen demanding money before issuing the permanent voter cards to their owners.
In the video seen by The PUNCHThe incident was observed to have taken place at Emene Primary School in the Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, where a tall, white woman, who was said to be an INEC official, spoke partially in the Igbo language, telling people to pay N1,000 each to collect their PVCs.
She said the money was for her transportation to the local government where they had to collect their cards.
When confronted by some people there that they were not allowed to pay to collect their PVCs, and that ₦1,000 she demanded was high, she got annoyed and arrogantly asked to go to the local government and get their voter cards pick up. .
Some registered voters appeared to have paid to collect their PVCs when they thanked her.
But when others continued to question her demand for money before they could get their voter cards, she resorted to verbal attacks. When she was threatened that she would be reported for indulging in an illegal act, she boasted that nothing could be done to her.
INEC Chairman Chief Press Secretary Rotimi Oyekanmi said in a conversation with our correspondent on Monday morning that the Commission is looking into the matter
“This is being investigated,” Oyekanmi said.
