The Social Democratic Party’s candidate for governor in Rivers State, Senator Magnus Abe, narrowly escaped death when some mobsters attacked his campaign train.

It was learned that Abe and his supporters were on their way to Mbiama in Ahoada West local government when they were ambushed by gunmen believed to be political thugs.

The gunmen reportedly turned up suddenly at Akinima, also in Ahoada West LGA, and used vehicles to prevent the campaign train from entering the area further.

Soon after, the thugs began firing sporadically, even as security agents associated with Abe tried to control the situation.

An eyewitness said, “You know we went to Ahoada West today. While on our way to Mbiama, the border between the states of Rivers and Bayelsa, we were intercepted somewhere near Akinima by a group of heavily armed youths. Before you know it, they started shooting and most of us fled.”

A video of the scene of the attack has since gone viral.

Commenting on the incident, Abe, a former senator representing Rivers South-East, said: “We went there and they went and used two vehicles to block the road so we couldn’t get there. Nigeria is a democracy and we all have the right to go to the people and share our ideas with them.”

When contacted, State Police spokesman Grace Iringe-Koko promised to contact the relevant police department and get back to us.

She had not done so at the time of submitting this report.
