A concern group has warned the vice-chancellor of Lokoja Federal University not to turn the institution into an ethnic entity, saying that the VC should address the issue of reckless and abnormal increase in tuition fees rather than chasing shadows, with help of his relatives.

Responding to the statement of a group, The Mediators Forum, who said that the call for resignation of Federal University Lokoja VC is reckless, the representative of the parents, Alhaji usman Isezuo, said that it is unfortunate that some persons in the name of a tribal association is now coming to speak on behalf of the VC, even though they have never participated in the institution’s agitation for a native VC.

According to him, they have abandoned the issue of raising school fees and are ranting about the mundane issue of ethnicity.

“What we are saying in the agitation is that Akinwumi is the only VC in all of the northern states who came up with the idea of an abnormal increase in tuition fees

“for the avoidance of doubt, we are not saying that the institution cannot increase the school fees, but what we are saying is that this increase of more than 300℅ is not only reckless to use their words, but also inhumanely insensitive and without any recourse to the current economic reality in our country.

‘If we may ask, who is Professor Akinwumi trying to impress. He came and increased the acceptance fee from N10,000 to N20,000 within his first few months in office, no one complained. Now he wants to increase accommodation from N20,000 to N60,000 and tuition fees from N55,000 to N188,000 and expects parents to remain calm. Did Professor Miri do this before the people revolted? Your ethnic group will not help you in this matter.

“To those who don’t have a single child in FUL today, who are in favor of the said tuition increase, posterity will not forgive you for sponsoring a child’s school dropout when it happened.

“If tuition fees were kept out of the reach of the poor people, can Prof. Akinwumi get to where he is today? He needs to know that Almighty God is watching no matter the amount of empowerment or donations to the church.

“Our advice to him is to visit other universities founded in the same period and other universities of the old generation, he will see that this effort is futile.

“We are also aware that he is boasting that he will continue with the exaltation, saying that the people cannot do anything, someone has appointed him, we will also go to the person.

“Finally, we advise Professor Akinwumi to take credit by treading softly on the issue of abnormal tuition increase, because his ethnic group will not be able to save him when the chips run out.”
