The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Retd.), approved the appointment of Brig. General YD Ahmed as Director General of the National Youth Service Corps.

He officially takes over Monday from Christy Uba who ran the NYSC’s affairs for about three months.

Uba, the top director, was appointed by the presidency following the resignation of Brig. General Mohammed Fadah for alleged incompetence and poor performance.

The PUNCH reported that on November 22, 2022, the NYSC announced the appointment of the Director of Information and Communication Technology,

Christy Uba as Acting Director General.

She made history as the first woman to be appointed to NYSC since its founding about 50 years ago.

NYSC Director of Press and Public Relations Eddy Megwa had said the appointment followed the resignation of Brigadier General Muhammad Kaku Fadah as DG by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (ret.)

The statement was captioned, “Ms. Uba to oversee NYSC pending nomination of substantive director general.”

“The highest-ranking director in the plan has taken over command of the force in the capacity of superintendent, pending the appointment of a substantive director-general by the president,” Megwa said.

About 48 hours after her appointment, Uba had promised to restore the status of the organization to make it more visible.

However, she said there was nothing new to be excited about that she has been with the organization for a long time.

Uba, who was the director overseeing the NYSC, stated this in an interview with journalists on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the 2022 Combined Press and Public Relations, Protocol Officers and Bureau Workers for Freedom of Information Workshop themed: “Strengthening of NYSC Corporate Image: Essential Role of Public Relations Officers.”

She said: “I expect more efficiency, diligence, dedication and they should do their job more professionally and hit the ground running more than ever before.

“I think it’s as usual because this is the work we do every day and we’ve been in the schedule for so long, I don’t think there’s anything new that I should be excited about.

“This time I’m ready to make sure we start doing our job the way we’ve been doing it and also to let the public know that NYSC is still working and we pray that as a team we’ve all agreed to work and make the schedule more visible than ever before.

“We want to restore the trust of the staff and the corps so they know nothing has changed at NYSC. We still remain the schedule that has been visible for a while, nothing has changed.”
