‘Shanty Town’ challenged me physically, artistically -Ini Edo
Like the Netflix series, Shanty Town continues to draw comments across social media platforms, with some actors receiving critical acclaim for their professional artistic displays. One of the protagonists of the series, Ini Edo, has revealed how challenging her role was.
Since Shanty Town was released on the streaming platform about a week ago, the Nigerian audience and their African counterparts have rated the series as number one, giving kudos to the actors for bringing out a different side of them that many people didn’t know about that they had.
Ini Edo, speaking to R about the role she played, said she was looking forward to a script that would challenge her physically and artistically, noting that being in the film took her to a new level as an actress.
Audiences around the world first got their first look at the Nigerian crime thriller on December 28, 2023, and its unique blend of an ensemble cast, action sequences and unique storyline raised fans’ anticipation.
Created by the duo of Xavier Ighorodje and Chichi Nworah, the six-piece Shanty Town starred Zubby Michael, Nancy Isime, Omowunmi Dada, Mercy Eke, Regina Daniels, Judith Audu and Peter Okoye of P-Square fame.
Talking further, the Akwa Ibom-born fencing diva revealed that it took her three weeks of training in mixed martial arts to get into the real life character.
“The physical challenge was one of the main reasons I jumped on that role. As an actor, I longed for a character who would challenge me both physically and artistically, and stepping away made me feel alive.
“I am filled with the reviews and humbled by the film’s success,” she added.
